The Real History Of The End Of The World by Sharan Newman [pages 183- 242]

ROAR POST #4

Summary:
* The Millennial Nineteenth Century *
During the American Revolution Christians believed that this was where the second coming will occur.
John Humphrey Noyes from the Oneida colony believed that the second coming will be 70 C.E. John saw that the years went by and he believes the second coming occurred and now people have been saved their mission is to now be more like perfection. Noyes was and archetypal charismatic leader that made it crystal clear that God spoke to him and he is to spread God's words. In the colony of Oneida women had to dress more like men because men were seen to be perfect and "man" is "perfect" so woman had to dress like them. Joseph Smith was a visionary prophet who provided his followers with a new testament and the book of Mormons. He may have been one of the reasons why Oneidans vanished and Mormons flourished. William Miller a muslim predicted that the end was 1844, but of course it was not so.
William Miller was born in Massachusetts February 15, 1782. He was the son of the Revolutionary war captain. He fought during wars following his father's footsteps and he began to worry about the after life. He wanted to prove the bible was accurate and he began by studying the book of Daniel to predict the end of the world. He came to his conclusion that the end will be March 23, 1843. William began his own religion the Millerites. They believed that the end will be April 23, 1843 and it did not happen and then William recalculated and said it will be Spring 1844. It never happened though.

Quotation:

"I was shown in a vision, and I still believe, that here was a shut door in 1844. All who saw the light of the first and  second angels' messages and rejected the light, were left in the darkness." - Ellen Gould White (Newman 193).

Reaction:

This was the opening quote in the chapter that speaks about William Miller and the Millerites. It is a very strong well worded quote because of the following, it goes with the belief of William and his cult but it also is within the Bible. William Miller wanted to prove that the Bible was accurate. Miller's faith was amazing and the quote explains how those who don't go with God or follow him, will be left in the darkness, which is the last thing William wanted.
