Summary:
Mattie was seeking for help when she was held captive by Ned. But not even Rooster came to the rescue instead they left her behind. Ned, Haze, the mexican and Tom Chaney reached their hideout, and Tom Chaney wanted to throw Mattie down a hole where snakes and bats lurked, but Ned wouldn't have it. Ned and Mattie were talking like if they were best friends and they spoke of what was happening. Mattie, was told to stay with Tom Chaney, while the rest of them were going to get a head start to their destination. Mattie said Tom Chaney was going to kill her, Ned said that Tom wouldn't get paid if he kills Mattie. Ned and the others left, Tom was given orders to take Mattie to the dug out and leave her there. Tom started talking and thinking about whether to kill Mattie, meanwhile, Mattie was boiling water for "coffee". The water was hot and it was boiling. Mattie picked up the kettle and threw the water at Tom's face. Mattie ran outside and Tom ended up catching up. LaBoeuf came to the rescue and captured Chaney and they shot him. Rooster was watching and fighting with Ned. Rooster had shot, Greaser Bob, Farell, and Permalee (Ned's helpers). Rooster came back with shotgun pellets on his shoulders and face. Ned was going to leave but LaBoeuf shot Ned with his riffle, and Ned died. Rooster and LaBoeuf and Mattie were happy, but little did they know that Chaney never died. Chaney came from behind and hit LaBoeuf with a rock on his head. Mattie shot Tom on the head with her pistol. After she shot, she was sent flying backwards because of the pistols force, she was trapped in the hole with snakes and bats. Rooster ended up getting up from all the wounds he had and shot Tom with a riffle, and this time Tom died. Mattie was still stuck in the hole and her pony, Blackie saved her. LaBoeuf awakened and he said his goodbyes and left and ended up in texas w. the Tom's corpse. Rooster and Mattie went on because they were injured. Mattie was seen by a doctor and so was Rooster, Mattie was sent home and Rooster went to do his own thing. Years have passed and Rooster was going to come to Memphis to visit Mattie but a few days before his arrival he died.
Quote:
Mattie said at the end of the book "I never had the time to get married but it is nobody's business if I am married or not married. I care nothing for what they say. I would marry and ugly baboon if I wanted to and make him my cashier. I never had the time to fool with. A woman with brains and a frank tongue and one sleeve pinned up and an invalid mother to care for is at some disadvantage, although I will say I could have had two or three old untidy men around here who had their eyes fastened on my bank. No, thank you!" (Portis 224).
Reaction:
When Mattie said this as her closing statement it made me smirk. She grew up to be very independent and she is not dependable in a man. She knows that she is not married and she wants everyone to mind their business about it. She doesn't want to be in a relationship where the man only cares about her money. She grew up to be very wise. At the end of this magnificent book, I want to say that I look up to her. She shows independence, strong character, and she is strong headed and knows what she wants and goes for it.
THANK YOU Mr. Doreian for recommending such an amazing, thrilling book :D !
