True Grit (pages 186-235)

FINAL ROAR POST [for term 3] !!! :D

Summary:
Mattie was seeking for help when she was held captive by Ned. But not even Rooster came to the rescue instead they left her behind. Ned, Haze, the mexican and Tom Chaney reached their hideout, and Tom Chaney wanted to throw Mattie down a hole where snakes and bats lurked, but Ned wouldn't have it. Ned and Mattie were talking like if they were best friends and they spoke of what was happening. Mattie, was told to stay with Tom Chaney, while the rest of them were going to get a head start to their destination. Mattie said Tom Chaney was going to kill her, Ned said that Tom wouldn't get paid if he kills Mattie. Ned and the others left, Tom was given orders to take Mattie to the dug out and leave her there. Tom started talking and thinking about whether to kill Mattie, meanwhile, Mattie was boiling water for "coffee". The water was hot and it was boiling. Mattie picked up the kettle and threw the water at Tom's face. Mattie ran outside and Tom ended up catching up. LaBoeuf came to the rescue and captured Chaney and they shot him. Rooster was watching and fighting with Ned. Rooster had shot, Greaser Bob, Farell, and Permalee (Ned's helpers). Rooster came back with shotgun pellets on his shoulders and face. Ned was going to leave but LaBoeuf shot Ned with his riffle, and Ned died. Rooster and LaBoeuf and Mattie were happy, but little did they know that Chaney never died. Chaney came from behind and hit LaBoeuf with a rock on his head. Mattie shot Tom on the head with her pistol. After she shot, she was sent flying backwards because of the pistols force, she was trapped in the hole with snakes and bats. Rooster ended up getting up from all the wounds he had and shot Tom with a riffle, and this time Tom died. Mattie was still stuck in the hole and her pony, Blackie saved her. LaBoeuf awakened and he said his goodbyes and left and ended up in texas w. the Tom's corpse. Rooster and Mattie went on because they were injured. Mattie was seen by a doctor and so was Rooster, Mattie was sent home and Rooster went to do his own thing. Years have passed and Rooster was going to come to Memphis to visit Mattie but a few days before his arrival he died.

Quote:
Mattie said at the end of the book "I never had the time to get married but it is nobody's business if I am married or not married. I care nothing for what they say. I would marry and ugly baboon if I wanted to and make him my cashier. I never had the time to fool with. A woman with brains and a frank tongue and one sleeve pinned up and an invalid mother to care for is at some disadvantage, although I will say I could have had two or three old untidy men around here who had their eyes fastened on my bank. No, thank you!" (Portis 224).

Reaction:
When Mattie said this as her closing statement it made me smirk. She grew up to be very independent and she is not dependable in a man. She knows that she is not married and she wants everyone to mind their business about it. She doesn't want to be in a relationship where the man only cares about her money. She grew up to be very wise. At the end of this magnificent book, I want to say that I look up to her. She shows independence, strong character, and she is strong headed and knows what she wants and goes for it.

THANK YOU Mr. Doreian for recommending such an amazing, thrilling book :D !

Summary:
BOOM! A riffle was shot. Who shot it? What did it hit? When? ...
Roosters plan was a success, Ned and his helpers came with him to the dug out to retrieve the horses and when you least expect it, LaBoeuf shot from a distant and it hit Lucky Ned Pepper's horse. LaBoeuf also shot two other men, but they were no help at all when they were investigated. LaBoeuf was shot in the forearm and Rooster and Mattie were getting their horses to catch up to them, but they were in the lead. Ned and Haze and the rest of their gang were also being looked for by the authorities. Ned and all of them robbed the Katy Flyer at Wagoners Switch. This was a train and Ned took the engineer and a fireman hostage and the rest of them, Haze, a mexican and the others opened the safe and took the belongings that is worth $17,000. Rooster and LaBoeuf and Mattie they went out to town. They talked to Captain Finch, he was friends with Rooster. Captain Finch told them that Ned, a mexican and Haze passed by 2 days ago. Rooster went and told Captain Finch to give Moon a proper burial. Rooster while on the horse he found a sack with some of the things that were stolen at the Katy Flyer at Wagoners Switch. Rooster, Mattie and LaBoeuf returned this money to the people at the train. Mattie, Rooster and LaBoeuf have been riding their horses for miles. They got tired and Mattie went down to the creek to find water to her surprise she find TOM CHANEY !!! Mattie rapidly grabs her pistol and shoots Tom, in the rib cage. Mattie was grabbed by Ned and held hostage and Tom Chaney did not die.

Quote:
Mattie said "Thus we had another clue. But we did not have Chaney" (Portis 154).

Reaction:
That word "but" was used :) !
Mattie when she said made me see that she has more clues that lead to Ned and Chaney, but she does not care about the clues. She is there to avenge on Chaney. Her goal is to have Chaney in her hands to proceed to the punishment Chaney has to serve. That word "but" kicked in my spider senses :D, it shows that Mattie can have a shoe or a gun that is owned by Chaney but she is not satisfied till she has Chaney himself.

True Grit (pages 112-149)

Summary:
Rooster never did say that this adventure was going to be easy. Rooster and LaBoeuf teamed up and for now Mattie is still with them, riding by their side and putting her all in her duties when they are at rest. They were all riding by horse when white star shaped molecules fell from the sky, snow! They were all very far from shelter so they built a fire and made coffee and went to sleep. The snow was getting harder and they needed to find a shelter, they kept on riding. A few miles down they found a dug out, owned by two men named Quincy and Moon, they were both in their twenties. Rooster and LaBoeuf entered the dug out without consulting the owners. Rooster and LaBoeuf felt as if though Moon and Quincy were a bother, so they were tied up, and investigated. Quincy and Moon both knew about Haze and Ned, but neither of them wanted to speak up. Moon was shot by Rooster and he was about to die, he couldn't bare the pain. Moon started speaking and right at that moment Quincy sliced four of Moon's fingers off. Rooster killed Quincy and the last few minutes that Moon was alive he confessed that Ned and his helpers were going to stop buy to pick up the horses and ride off. Moon then died. Rooster and LaBoeuf and Mattie they all planned out a plan. They knew that Ned and his helpers were going to stop buy anytime to pick up the horses and they were going to attack. They're plan worked out. Ned and his helpers went to pick up the horses but they found it suspicious that Moon and Quincy were not there. Ned and Tom Chaney are suppose to be together, working along sides but Mattie has not spotted Chaney.

Quote:
Mattie said to Quincy "Yes, and I will say it again. I don't like they way you look and I don't like the way you are cutting up that turkey. I hope you go to jail. My lawyer will not help you" (Portis 132).

Reaction:
My reaction to what Mattie said to Quincy was shocking. Quincy didn't see it coming because he saw that Mattie was young and was girl he did not expect to have her speak up to him. I see Mattie as not a role model in the sense of her rudeness but a role model in the way that she stands up for herself regardless of who you are. She does not see herself as anything less than what she really is, and I look up to her for that.

True Grit (pages 69-112)

Summary:
Who is this man that showed up at the door? The only intentions he has is to catch Tom Chaney and to kill him, but he wants to only kill him for the senator, who was killed by him. This man wants to team up with Rooster, LaBoeuf, that's the man. Mattie, the one who wants to kill Tom Chaney as well but she wants to kill her to avenge for her dad's death and is teamed up with Rooster. It was dinner time and LaBoeuf showed up and brought up questions to Mattie, she answered and to her disbelief she made the realization that LaBoeuf is trying to kill Tom Chaney and wants to team up with Mattie, but Mattie does not want anything to do with him. LaBoeuf said he is going to have a talk with Rooster about the plans to kill Tom. Mattie shows up one afternoon while they were discussing these matters and they both teamed up. Mattie was enraged, she took matters in her own hands and she headed on down at sunrise at the boat that took her to the other side of town. She met up with Rooster and Laboeuf, and they were ignoring her and they were treating her like worthless trash. LaBoeuf threatened her and said that if she continued on that he was going to whip her, and he went on with his word, Rooster was mad that LaBoeuf hit Mattie that it showed acceptance and the three of them now are riding on the search of Tom Chaney.

Quote:
Rooster said "I would hate to see anything happen to her" (Portis 99).

Reaction:
As I read this I made a connection with my dad and I. You can say I'm a daddy's girl, and I would hate to see something happen to him because it would hurt me very dearly. To others they may have a stronger connection with family or friends but everyone has someone who would hate to see something misfortunate happen to them. This quote also foreshadowed the care that Rooster has for Mattie. Rooster said she was a pain in the neck and that she is very hard headed, but he respected her decisions and never fought with her. It showed that Rooster cares for Mattie a lot. Rooster portrays himself like a father to Mattie, he just wants to take care of her, and make sure she is alright.

True Grit (pages 1- 68)

NEW ROAR BOOK :D
POST #1

Summary :
A 14 year old, Mattie Ross, has heard of the killing of her father Frank Ross. When you're a lady like her the only thing you should feel is the loneliness and the tears should be going down your cheeks. On the other hand Mattie a strong willed and persistent persona, has only one intention: to avenge on Tom Chaney. of being in Fort Smith, to take captive of Tom Chaney. Tom Chaney never showed that he cared when Frank would provide him a shelter and food, it was that one day when Frank wanted to go to Fort Smith, Arkansas, to buy ponies so that they can help the herd. When Tom heard that Frank was leaving, he wanted to tag along he persisted and went along. Tom Chaney went to a barroom and he got into a game and lost. He went back to the Monarch Boardinghouse where they were stationed. Tom was telling Frank that he was cheated on in the game and wanted his money back, Tom was drunk and he was going to shoot. Frank was trying to impede this, and got shot by Tom. Tom took Frank's life, his horse, $150, and two california gold pieces that he carried in his trouser band. Mattie went on down to Fort Smith and she told Yarnell (the guy who took her to see her dad) to go home and take her dad's corpse back to their home and that she will stay. Mattie on her stay she spoke to the owner of Col. G. Stonehill and she debated with him for $350 dollars he owed her for her dad's saddle, which was left in his hands and he got it stolen from him. Mattie she then saw that the Marshalls were not doing anything to catch Tom Chaney. Mattie got her sources and she is going to want Rooster Cogburn to help her kill Tom Chaney.

Quote:
Mattie had stated "I will not be pushed about when I am in the right." (Portis 35).

Reaction:
My reaction to this quote is that it is very wise for a 14 year old girl. This quote shows that Mattie is a very strong willed daughter, she goes for what she believes in and strives for what she knows is right. Mattie at the start seems like a very arrogant girl, with no class. When you read on you see that she is completely polite but she doesn't speak in shame nor is she shy, she speaks in a demanding way that should make the person she speaks to know she means business.

Returnable Girl (Pages:195-229)

Summary:
The grass is always greener on the other side. From the looks of it things began hard. Cat and Ronnie were at Cat's basement the police was there, they had their hands up and cuffed. They were going to juvenile they thought. Alison went over there and surprisingly she was not mad. This made Ronnie think a little harder and finally made her say that she wants Alison as her mother. Alison understood her and was never mad. At the end of all the talking Cat was sentenced for a hearing July 15 and Ronnie had to testify. Ronnie was horrified she did not know what to say or what to do. The day came and when she was testifying she told nothing but the truth and that made Cat look even more guilty. Cat was guilty and she was sentenced to juvenile and then she had been moved out her house because her therapist found out that Cat was abused and Bud is being looked for by the authorities. Cat is being under therapy and care. Ronnie got to go to Alaska to see her family and her two younger brothers. They were surprised to see her and in the Francis and Alison were the guardians of Ronnie. In the end it was a happy ending for all.

Quote:
Ronnie said "I thought she'd be angry, but remarkably her eyes held neither judgement nor blame. And that's when  i finally got it. This was what it felt like when somebody truly loved you" (Lowell 199).

Reaction:
All of what happened at the end of the chapter was amazing because of all the happy endings but most importantly is the protagonist. I love how part 3 had this saying intergraded. It shows that Alison was a very caring mother and that she never really was going to give hope on her daughter. It foreshadowed that Ronnie was going to stay with her Alison because she treated her better than any other foster person has. This made me think on how one never appreciates what they have until they're at the verge of loosing them. Luckily Ronnie opened her eyes early and saw all she ever needed was there.

Returnable Girl (Pages:156-195)

Summary:
The disco ball spinning everyone dancing, there was a circle around a couple dancing. Who where they? Cat and Tyler that's who. Tyler was Paige's ex. They were unofficial and Cat saw that they had a chance and went for it. Cat was grinding on Tyler and Paige's eyes were beaming with fury. Paige after a few minutes was sitting outside and Tyler and her kissed and made up. But Paige was not going to forget what Cat did. . . this meant revenge. At home it was Ronnie's birthday she was finally 14 and Ronnie for her birthday went to church. She ended up missing the event and went to Francis and talked to him and she told him that she had a dream about her mom being far and Ronnie was looking for something and that is when she came to the conclusion that she did not want to leave her Alison and go with her mom. Alison was not evesdropping but when she entered Ronnie left and then Alison and Francis kissed. Ronnie saw the happiness between the two and she was beginning to open her eyes and then she ended up making a realization that maybe staying with Alison is best. At school; Cat was going through hell everyone made fun of her treated her horrible and then she ended up not showing up to school. Cat made a plan with Ronnie to make Paige's life hell for everything. Turns out that Paige and Cat were in the basement alone, Ronnie comes in and Cat had a gun armed against Paige's head.

Quote:
Francis was saying to Ronnie "It's always better to stop, or at least pause, before heading down a certain path if you have significant doubts, rather than to proceed despite those feelings. I believe some people would call that listening to your heart" (Lowell 165).

Reaction:
My reaction to what Francis made me think on my life and just go through the decisions I took knowing that I did not listen to my heart. The advice given was beautiful, It spoke more than anything. This quote showed how much Francis cares about her Ronnie, Ronnie right now is confused but she should know that she has people who love her. Francis never told her to give up on her mom, even though he did want her to, but he just gave her advice. Listening to your heart is key to happiness !
