"Returnable Girl"- Pamela Lowell . . Pages 1- 74

Summary:
Veronica Hartman also known as Ronnie is a foster child. Her mom lives in Alaska with her two step brothers Danny and Derek. Ronnie right now is stationed at Alison Hauser's house in Pennsylvania. Ronnie's mom left her at her Uncle and Aunt's house and didnt come back for her. Veronica would get calls from her mom weekly but that was not enough. The uncle and aunt said it was enough, and made Ronnie's mom not call her. The real reason was because Ronnie's mom was in Jail for doing drugs. Kenny is Ronnie's step dad and he lives with Ronnie's mom. Kenny is evil as Ronnie claims, Ronnie wrote in her diary that once he sent Ronnie's mom flying through the kitchen, which shows how abusive he is. This story begins by showing one of Ronnie's side, her evil side. She was having a tantrum when she was accused of stealing money from her foster mom, Alison Hauser, who is also her therapist. Ronnie's mom says that some day she will go and get her daughter, Ronnie, she says that at the moment she does not have the money. The real problem here is that Ronnie's mom does have the money but she always spends it on drugs and alcohol. Ronnie is in the 8th grade at Liberty Middle School. That was when she met Cat, her only friend. Ronnie always wanted to hang out with Paige, Sarika, and Britnee because they were the popular girls at the school. Cat and Ronnie during the summer became really close that they were over each others houses everyday. When school started every morning they would be together in the bus. One day,  Paige was showing off her new silver necklace that cost $200 and Cat wanted to see the necklace. In the locker room, Cat got framed for stealing the necklace, it was in her shoes, Ronnie placed it there. Ronnie then was asked where it was and she snitched on Cat. Paige then praised Ronnie for saving her necklace and being a hero. From that day on, Ronnie got what she wanted, she wanted to be popular. But she ended up leaving her friend Cat, a friend who really knew her, for Paige, somewhere she did not belong. Paige did all sorts of bad things and dragged Ronnie into them, but most of all she shop lifted. Ronnie knew it was wrong and but her desire to be popular won her conscience, she never got caught. When Ronnie got home she went to her mom's room and took her charm bracelet which had a significant amount of value to Alison. Alison found out that Ronnie "stole" it and they had a talk. Ronnie felt lonely, just like Alison.

Quotation:
Ronnie said "I still believe in God, even after all that's happened to me" (Lowell 3).

Reaction:
This quote had been stated in the beginning of the book. It says a lot about the character Ronnie. It foreshadows what is going to be mentioned in the book. Lowell did not make the character Ronnie say that because she felt like it. Lowell put it there to symbolize how there's still hope in Ronnie's life. God is still in her life. God was introduced to her in the past, from her uncle and aunt. They would go to church and pray as well as be involved in religious events. God was there from the start and she has become distant from him because she has not found some one to take her. Ronnie by saying that , it shows that there is a sweet child inside of her. She is not completely evil. The second part Ronnie said "... even after all that's happened to me" (Lowell 3), shows that Ronnie is a child who has gone through a lot and that the author is going to mention later on in the book what troubled Ronnie in her childhood.
